Description of a New Species with a Remarkable Cyst Structure in the Genus Naegleria: Naegleria angularis sp. n
نویسندگان
چکیده
A vahlkampfiid amoeba was isolated from a water sample collected in Peru. Ribosomal DNA sequence analysis showed that the isolate belongs to the genus Naegleria, that it represents a novel species and that its closest relative is N. pussardi. Although there is very little sequence difference between the new isolate and N. pussardi, and both species grow at 40°C, their cyst morphology is very different. The cysts of the new species are angular to star-like in appearance and so do not resemble the cysts of any described Naegleria species. The strain did not form flagellates in distilled water but did transform in Prescott’s and James’s solution. The name N. angularis sp. n. is proposed for this isolate with angular cysts.

متن کاملIsolation and Identification of Naegleria Species from Environmental Water in Changchun, Northeastern China
BACKGROUND Naegleria is a free-living amoeba, and pathogenic Naegleria may pose a health risk to people exposed to recreational water. Our objective in this study was to determine if there are pathogenic amoebae in environmental water samples from Changchun, Northeastern China. METHODS During July to September 2012, a total of 70 water samples were collected from Changchun, Northeastern China...
متن کاملBiology of Naegleria spp.
The genus Naegleria consists of free-living amoebae widely distributed in soil and freshwater habitats throughout the world. These organisms characteristically undergo transformation from amoebae to flagellates. There are six species of Naegleria: N. fowtleri, N. aiustr(aliensis, N. lov, aniensis, N. griberi, N. jadini, and N. tliorntoni. Each species may be distinguished on the basis of cyst mo...

The occurrence of waterborne parasites coupled with water parameters at various processing sites of two drinking water treatment plants (A and B) and seven distribution system (DS) sites in Sarawak, Malaysia were studied. Ten liters of water underwent immunomagnetic separation (IMS) technique to detect the presence of Giardia and Cryptosporidium (oo)cysts. The remaining supernatant was used to ...
متن کاملBiochemical Criteria of Naegleria Species Isolated from the Egyptian Aquatic Environment
The free-living amoebae Naegleria species (spp.) have been recognized as etiologic agents of amoebic encephalitis, keratitis, otitis, lung lesions and other skin infections mainly in immuno-compromised individuals. In this study, morphological and biochemical characterization of Naegleia strains isolated from the Egyptian aquatic environment were surveyed. Some Naegleria species were cultivated...
